Like most people, I engage in the popular end-of-year activity of compiling a short list of New Year's resolutions (e.g. exercise more, eat more veggies, etc.). This year, however, I thought I'd post a few of special importance to me...with hopes that making them public will help me stick to keeping them! In no particular order, they are:
1) Don't be a slouch! (a.k.a. My Posture!) When we lived in Japan, I was acutely aware of how I'm every bit of 5'8". People (even friends) there would say, "You're big," and I'd correct them by saying, "No, I'm tall." Ah, language nuances... Anyhow, as a result, I started to slouch a lot. Well, it's been five years since we moved home and my posture is still suffering. I'm working hard to improve it.
2) Now where did I put my second resolution... (a.k.a. Clutter!) Sadly, this has been on my resolution list since 7th grade. I'd like to think, though, that since we're likely moving this year, there is hope (or doom, shall I say??) for our clutter. We've made some improvements in 2011, but there's a lot more to do.
3) Well, it's about thyme! (a.k.a. Cooking!) This was the first year in three that I wasn't pregnant or had a newborn in the house, so I did get to cook a bit more--try out some new recipes, really dig into our farmers' market produce, and even experiment sans-cookbook. In 2012, I hope to do some more, especially since Sammy and Brie are usually game for whatever I make. (OK, the spaghetti squash was not popular, but you can't win everytime!)
4) Stay Level-Headed! (a.k.a. DIY Projects!) We did a few of these in 2011 (as you may have seen in recent blog posts), but there's more to do as we get our home ready to go on the market. Oh, and I just got a shiny new (and cherry red!) staple gun for the holidays that I can't wait to try out! Stay tuned!
5) Marry Durham! (a.k.a. Make the most of our time left in the Bull City!) In recent polling, 91 percent of Durham citizens said they were proud to live here and WE AGREE!! Each year that we've lived here, we've fallen more in love with our wonderful town and all it has to offer. We hope to make the most of the next seven or eight months by frequenting even more local restaurants and businesses, enjoying Durham's annual festivals, and being part of our vibrant, diverse community.
As per the reference above: we were unable to attend the very popular "Marry Durham" festivities earlier this year, but we hope to go in 2012. And we're pretty confident that the marriage can withstand a long-distance relationship... ;-)
To that end, we hope that you'll make visiting us here in Durham one of your 2012 resolutions. We're probably going to have to move in July or August, but until then, our guestroom is open and/or we can use Beth's lifetime friends-and-family discount from Marriott (we live just 5 minutes from a Springhill Suites). Come eat a great meal or two, walk around the Duke Gardens, visit the Museum of Life & Science, catch a show, or just come and relax in Durham, NC. It's the place to be and we'd love to host you!
Happy New Year, everyone! Here's to health, happiness and exciting things in 2012! And, Go, 'Hoos!
