Halloween 2015: Old-school / New-school

Our whole family had a wonderful Halloween this year...celebrating with many traditions--both old and new! The old-school ways felt familiar and reminded me and Tony of the Halloweens we enjoyed as kids; the new-school concepts, on the other hand, showed us how times have changed a bit...so many novel ideas that this generation will get to incorporate in their holiday. Here's a short list I made of both!

Old-school: Classroom Halloween Party and Parade! Sam's class had a really fun "Fall Harvest" party in their classroom last week. The kids made skeleton art...
And decorated and ate cookies!
Hey, I know you!
Lining up to leave for the parade...
Ready to see all the costumes!
Here comes our little ghost!
And our (jolly?) zombie!
Old-school: Halloween-themed art projects! A haunted house, anyone??
Old-school: Playing in the fall leaves!
And tackling your siblings!
Old-school: Costumes like zombies, ghosts and witches. Sam and Brie both were inspired by Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video...doesn't get more "old school" than that! (Sebastian was Sebastian the Crab from "The Little Mermaid." Disney is old-school, too, right?)
And Nonna the cool witch is definitely old-school!
Old-school: Trick-or-treating in your very own neighborhood with your siblings, friends and dozens of other young kids! Here are Brie and her buddy Sarp the Vampire!
Old-school: Post-Halloween lunch with your cousins!
And running around outside to burn off all that candy from the night before!
New-school: We got "Booed!" at bedtime! The kids loved it!
New-school: Enjoying Entertrainment Junction's Halloween exhibit! Our older kids have loved it there for years and this time Sebastian got in on the action!

New-school: Fireside Pokemon battles!
New-school: An app to see which houses to visit when trick-or-treating. I guess having the ol' porch light on doesn't cut it these days??
"Should we use this fancy, new app, Sebastian?" "No way, Nonno!"
New-school: Trends like the Teal Pumpkin Project! Put out non-food items in case a trick-or-treater has an allergy?? No problem! We happily added spray-painting a pumpkin and buying some Halloween tattoos and play-doh to our pre-Halloween to-do list!
New-school: A Meowth jack-o-lantern! Sam's majorly into Pokemon these days, so he and Tony chose one of his favorite characters for Sam's pumpkin. (I recognize that Pokemon has been around for over 15 years, but I think it's "new-school" since we didn't have it as kids!)
New-school: New candy! Let's be honest...99% of the candy that Sam and Brie brought home were the same kinds that we got when trick-or-treating as kids. But...Tony and I had never seen this one before. What a great idea!
I'd say our Halloween was a great combination of old-school and new-school traditions. The old-school ones made me smile...so much like the Halloweens that Tony and I grew up with. And the new?? Well, I think there's a place for them, too. And lest we forget...they'll be old-school for Sammy, Brie and Sebastian one day!!
