Literary Analysis with a 4-year-old

Earlier this afternoon, the kids and I were reading For Just One Day by Laura Leuck. I should also add--for the sake of this post--that the illustrator of this fine library book is Marc Boutavant.

Sammy saw this page (above) and asked, "What's on his head?"
Me: "A swim cap. It keeps your hair from getting wet.. and then your hair doesn't get in your way while you're swimming."
Sammy: "Why do the other kids have different colors?"
Me: "I don't know. Good question!"

Sammy:  "He has glasses on?"
Me:  "Those are his goggles."

Sammy:  "Why does he have his undies on?"
Me:  "Oh, that's his swimsuit."
Sammy:  "Why is that his swimsuit?"
Me:  "Probably because he's European."
Sammy:  "A pean?"
Me:  "EURopean."
Sammy:  "I'm not a pean! I'm Superhero Sammy!"

Thanks a lot, Mr. Boutavant. Without your colorful, Speedo-inspired drawing, I would not have had this adorable (and hilarious!) conversation with my 4-year-old.  :-)
