Samuel just turned 14. FOUR-TEEN. Doesn't that sound REALLY old? Nuts! He recently (and gleefully) surpassed me in height. I was equal parts delighted and in disbelief.
He continues to be a dedicated and enthusiastic student, a budding architect (which seems to appear in fits and spurts of great art) and emerging leader. He's still a foodie, still obsessed with old-school video games and still a dedicated friend. It's been really remarkable to watch him grow into young adulthood!
Here are Samuel, Brie and their friend Robbie before the JH winter dance. For a few years now, Samuel has been a big fan of all things plaid...especially traditional Buffalo plaid.
Which explains how I decorated his birthday cake this year! (He always requests the same brownie cake with cream cheese frosting. π)
Samuel's major accomplishment this year was making the Cincinnati Youth Wind Ensemble for clarinet. It's been hard work, but he's stuck with it. They recently had their winter concert and it was fabulous!!
In the fall, his soccer coach sent us this beautiful email about him. Tony and I both got choked up reading it:
Hi Stephanie
I am very impressed with Samuel, what a very nice young man.
He is the only boy who greets and thanks the coaches, it is a shame he is the only one but that's the world we live in.
I also had a few instances where things got a bit overheated but he was quick to control his temper which is very remarkable at this young age.
KEEP UP the great parenting, the WORLD needs more young man like him.

Samuel, Brie and their friend Sam still have their little Sunday School trio going. Back by popular demand, here were The Dreidelites over the weekend.
And we watched the World Cup! Samuel not only had a pretty good bracket, but he had Argentina and France in the final with Argentina winning. Not bad!!
