Book Worms takes flight!

This year I am co-chairing Book Worms: the K-2nd grade book club for our school district's gifted program! The kids read a book that we choose, and then we all go on a field trip related to the book--to enhance and reinforce learning!

Today (a teacher work day) was our first Book Worms field trip! In advance, we read Night Flight: Amelia Earhart Crosses the Atlantic by Robert Burleigh...
and then visited the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force in Dayton! After a picnic lunch (can you tell we had the most gorgeous mid-October weather? It was 83 and sunny today!), we discussed the book as a group.
It was fun to hear what the children thought of Amelia Earhart and her flight across the Atlantic.
Everyone shared what they liked most about the story...
and the things they would like to try if they were courageous and determined like Amelia!
Then we explored the museum, which is pretty awesome. Airplanes, jets, helicopters, rockets and memorabilia galore!
We've seen one of the real Shuttles in DC, but this recreation was cool because you can walk inside...
and see rooms up close like the flight deck!
The museum put together an age-appropriate scavenger hunt that the kids really enjoyed (though they were disappointed to learn that there was no prize for their completed work. :-O )!
Sam loved this simulator. Landing the Shuttle is tough stuff!
Here's Sebastian climbing the stairs to (a Reagan era) Air Force One! It was 80s-rific inside!
Yay, for the U.S. Air Force Museum and Amelia Earhart...and great books with friends!!
P.S. Thank you, Nonno, for the fantastic idea for this field trip!!
